HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION
From: "Diskan, Jill (EOM)" <Jill.Diskan@dc.gov>
Fall Collection of Household Hazards Set for Saturday, November 2
Residents can dispose of hazardous materials and home electronics at
a
special collection site. Special Electronics Recycler Onsite
(Washington, DC) The District Department of Public Works (DPW) will
hold
its annual fall collection of household hazards Saturday, November
2
from 9 am to 3 pm in the Carter Barron Amphitheater parking lot at
16th
and Kennedy Streets, NW. DC residents can bring items including old
cleaning and gardening chemicals, small quantities of gasoline,
pesticides and poisons, acids, varnish, oil-based paints, solvents,
aerosols, wood preservatives, spent batteries of all kinds, roofing
tar,
chemistry sets, automotive fluids-and even asbestos floor tiles-to
the
collection site for environmentally safe disposal or recycling.
A
professional hazardous waste contractor will remove materials from
resident's vehicles. A licensed hauler will take the waste to a facility
that has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
for
processing. It is estimated that the average home contains between
50
and 100 pounds of accumulated hazardous wastes including car batteries,
paint and petroleum products.
DPW will have a special electronics recycler onsite for the Household
Hazardous Waste Collection. Residents may bring televisions and audio
equipment (except speakers), computers, computer parts and computer
components. All computer monitors and TV screens must be intact, not
cracked, punctured or shattered. A small fee is assessed only for TVs
and computer monitors, which contain a significant amount of lead and
require special handling. The fee is dependent on the size of the screen
(CRT tube).
Items that will not be accepted during the Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Day include ammunition, explosives, bulk trash, wooden TV
consoles, propane tanks, microwave ovens and other appliances,
radioactive or biologically active wastes.

You asked about "cleaning out" the Brita water filters. There is no
cleaning involved. You merely remove the old drop-in cartridge and
drop
in a new one. Takes 3 seconds. It's only money. But they
work.
**** From: Joseph Cotruvo <vze254xa@verizon.net>
Comment to Mr. Adamopolis in regard to lead:
It should not be necessary for anyone in DC to buy a home treatment
system to remove lead or other contaminants. Firstly, most of the homes
do not have lead that exceeds standards. DC water is generally of good
quality. The mains water does not have significant amounts of lead
in
it. Homes that do usually either have lead gooseneck connections
or
lead service lines or have a problem with their internal pipes
(old
lead solder). Solders used after about 1988 do not have lead in them.
.
You should also have WASA determine whether you have a lead service
line, and if so when it will be replaced. If the gooseneck or
service
line is made of lead the easiest thing to do is to let the water run
(especially in the morning, ie take your shower first) until you feel
the temperature change and run it a few more seconds so the line has
cleared.. That means that water that has been standing in your pipes
overnight has been flushed and water from the main is flowing.
Filters that are certified by NSF or UL and state that they remove lead
will do so. Those certification companies test water treatment devices
and allow only verified claims.
**** From: John Coons <johncoons@yahoo.com>
In this discussion, we should advise people that adults are much
more
resistant to lead toxicity than children. For households without
kids,
this isn't nearly as important, but those with children should make
the
effort to test.
Lead absorption from pipes is also less significant that from dust
generated where lead paint is being disturbed. Examples would
include
windows with lead paint that are opened and closed, dust created during
remodeling where lead paint is present and homes where children are
present of an age where they crawl and put objects in the mouth.
WHO IS THE INCONSIDERATE NEIGHBOR NEAR WARREN STREET ?

[ From: "D. Noble" <noble@olg.com> Someone is not cleaning up after
their dog on the 4600 block of Warren Street. So far there has
been dog
waste on my front lawn and on the grassy stretch where I park my car.
Please be considerate and scoop up the poop! Thank you.]
I agree with D. Noble. This occurs all the time on our yard as
well,
Warren St. We are always finding big surprises usually in the
morning
when we are rushing off to school and work. Occasionally, people
have
their dogs dumping there at night. People should cleanup after
their
dogs or stay in their own yards. Daniel Plumb

David Hager's nomination to Chair the FDA's important Reproductive
Health Drugs Advisory Committee
From: "sarahbarnett" <sarahbarnett1@starpower.net>
I do hope you are not offended by this, however a friend forwarded
this
to me yesterday. Because it affects the rights of women I took
the time
to reformat and forward it on to you. If you have time please
call the
number given in the article, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy
Thompson at 202.690.7000 and voice your opposition. You actually
get to
speak to a person, who takes your name and asks where you're calling
from. Thanks for calling - here's the e-mail:
Its from Americans United for Separation of Church and State

In the latest attempt to jeopardize women's health by thwarting access
to safe and legal medical abortion, the Bush administration plans to
appoint an openly anti-abortion physician to a critical Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) post focused on women's health.
TAKE ACTION http://www.capwiz.com/fmf1/issues/alert/?alertid=666681
Dr. W. David Hager has been picked to chair the FDA's important
Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee, the committee that paved
the way for mifepristone's approval in 2000. Dr. Hager, an OB/GYN,
whose
writings include the book As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women
Then
and Now and another book emphasizing the "restorative power of Jesus
Christ in one's life" and recommending Scripture readings and prayers
for headaches and premenstrual syndrome, has extremely strong ties
to
the Christian Medical Association and to the anti-abortion group Focus
on the Family.
Hagar's mission is religiously motivated. He has an ardent interest
in
revoking approval for mifepristone as a safe and early form of medical
abortion. Hagar recently assisted the Christian Medical Association
in a
"citizen's petition" which calls upon the FDA to revoke it's approval
of
mifepristone in the name of women's health. Besides wanting to restrict
a women's access to a safe and legal abortion, many conservatives such
as Hager are also interested in restricting women's access to birth
control.
In his private OB/GYN practice, Hager refuses to prescribe
contraceptives to unmarried women.
Should Hagar be appointed, overturning of mifepristone's approval on
religious grounds rather than scientific merit would halt the
development of mifepristone as a treatment for numerous medical
conditions disproportionately affecting women. While prestigious
research institutions such as Stanford, MD Anderson and the NIH are
studying mifepristone's multiple medical potential, Hagar's appointment
would clearly jeopardize not only safe and early medical abortion but
also ongoing scientific research indicating that mifepristone may well
become an important drug in the treatment of breast cancer, uterine
cancer, uterine fibroid tumors, psychotic depression, bipolar depression
and Cushing's syndrome.
Time magazine calls Hager "a scantily credentialed doctor." While his
resume lists Hager as a professor at the University of Kentucky, a
university official states that Hager's position with the university
is
part-time and voluntary, citing that he spends time with interns at
the
Lexington's Central Baptist Hospital, not at the university itself.
The Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee is an important,
11-member panel that can heavily influence women's health policy.
Curiously, Linda Arey Skladany, the former drug lobbyist with strong
ties to the Bush family who nominated Hager for the position, rejected
at least two better qualified nominees proposed by FDA staff members:
a
former dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health
as
well as a director of maternal-fetal medicine at Massachusetts General
Hospital.
Tell the Bush Administration that mixing religion and medicine is
unacceptable. Using the FDA to promote a political agenda is
overreaching, inappropriate, and seriously threatens women's health.
Take action now! Call Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson
at 202-690-7000. Oppose the impending appointment of W. David Hager
to
the FDA Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Critical drug
public policy and research must not be held hostage by anti-abortion
politics.
