WHO'S PINCHING THE SUPERCANS AND RECYCLING BINS?
**** From: "Pinder, Joe" <Joe.Pinder@mail.house.gov>
Has anyone had problems with theft of supercans or recycling bins? In
the last three or four months somebody clipped my new (reddish)
recycling bin and last week someone clipped my neighbor's supercan. I
got a new bin; don't know if the can will be replaced? This all seems
sort of odd. The garbage guys often leave them sort of strewn about the
alley but in a dozen years this never happened before. We live near
37/Veazey.

INSPECTION FIASCO
**** From:  Joanne Capper jocapper@att.net
I'd like to describe my most recent auto inspection fiasco.  On my first
trip to the station, I found a reasonable line but failed to pass due
to
an emissions failure, which they said required that I bring the car
back
to them after getting fixed - not to a reinspection station near my
home.  I took the car to a local gas station to get it fixed, but
they
said there was nothing wrong with the emissions.  I debated whether
to
take it somewhere else before going back to the inspection station,
but
took the risk of going directly back.  The line this time was around
3
sides of the block - on one of those 95+ days.  It took over 2 hours
to
get through the line.  It passed the emissions test - without me ever
having done a thing to the car.  Clearly either the measurement
instrument or the reader of the instrument are not reliably reading
the
emissions.  In all, I spent about 6.5 hours getting my inspection
sticker.

Gail Redmann of the D.C. Historical Society speak about Tenleytown
around the turn of the century, and also possibly Armsleigh Park and
Friendship Heights.  She will have slides.  She will also discuss the

------------------
Tenleytown is the second oldest settlement in the area, after
Georgetown.  Earlier this year, the 4400 and 4500 blocks of Grant
Road
in Tenleytown were given an official designation as a historic
district.  The proud residents of this area want to invite you to
come
and see our interesting area and learn about its history.

On Saturday, October 5, you are cordially invited to help us
celebrate
Tenleytown History Day between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the 4400 block
of
Grant Road.  The rain date will be Sunday, October 6.  The theme of
this
event is to commemorate the recent historic designation of Grant
Road.
There will be several tours throughout the day, including a
Tenleytown
walking tour, the Armsleigh Park tour, and a tour of the old
Methodist
Cemetery where many of  the original families of Tenleytown rest.
There
will also be historic pictures and information.

This will be a potluck event so we ask each family to bring a dish or
two.  There will be children's activities.  The Day is being
sponsored
by  Tenleytown Neighbors Association and Tenleytown Historical
Society.

LETTER REGARDING TEMPORARY FIRE HOUSE
Subject:  Re: Councilmember Kathy Patterson's E-newsletter #8
**** From: Abauer4600@aol.com (Amy Bauer)
To: Ppagano@dccouncil.washington.dc.us
CC: KPATTERSON@dccouncil.washington.dc.us

Hi Penny,
Gotta question about the Naval Security Station Firehouse.  Isn't
there
a law regarding fitness for habitation and shouldn't it apply to
firehouses?  Apparently the Navy won't allow running water which
means
no washing hands after using the bathroom.  UGH!  Is it really
practical
to ask people to get dressed in the middle of the night and go next
door
to wash their hands after using the toilet? Sometimes people have to
get
up several times in the night for this purpose.  They won't even be
able
to rinse out a sponge to wipe down surfaces before and after they
eat!!!

I would think that there would be a law that an employer had to
provide
proper sanitary conditions in any work place much less one that is
also
a living space.  How are they going to "fix" this situation so that
the
temporary location does not become a germ house?  Would you work in a
place that made you put on your coat to go next door to get running
water?  I would not.

Unfortunately, the fire department, under the failed and disastrous
leadership of Mr. Few, failed to properly plan for this entire
project
and seems to have only responded with this temporary location when
the
community turned up the heat.  This is not how things should be done
and
hopefully the next firehouse project in this city will be
accomplished
under the leadership of strong leader who won't be bullied by HPO.
Acting Deputy Fire Chief Steve Reid, perhaps?

Chief Reid could return this fire department to the standards of
excellence and high morale that once was common throughout the
department!

Looking forward to hearing from you on this issue.

HELP FOR STODDERT SCHOOL
**** From:  anc3b@aol.com
Stoddert PTA needs your help to collect coupons, labels, lids, and
UPC
codes!  This year Stoddert is participating in two different, but
similar, programs that will exchange boxtops, labels, UPCs (universal
product codes, a.k.a. barcodes), and jar lids for money and supplies:
Campbell's Labels for Education and General Mills' Boxtops for
Education.

Labels for Education provides merchandise ranging from computers to
scientific laboratory equipment in return for front label panels of
Campbell and Swanson soup cans and Franco-American Spaghettios, lids
from Pace salsa, and UPCs from Pepperidge Farm breads and (Yes!)
Goldfish. Special labels from Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup count as
two labels and, if we are lucky enough to find a winning label,
$25,000
for the school. A list of eligible products is posted on the Labels
for
Education website, which you can visit through http://stoddert.org.
Visit the website to make a pledge or learn about other ways to help
Stoddert.

Boxtops for Education  will pay Stoddert for each coupon (cut from
the
boxtop of an eligible product) that is returned by the school to
General
Mills.  Lots of cereal boxes qualify.  A list of all  eligible
products
appears on the Boxtops for Education website, which also can be
accessed
through http://stoddert.org.

Labels and boxtops may be brought to the PTA information center
outside
the school office or to your child's classroom where there are
collection boxes.  Thanks!
