ABSENTEE BALLOT ERROR
From: "Tommy Tomlinson and Penni St. Hilaire" <tommyt@erols.com>
We are voting absentee ballot in the primary and yesterday received the
ballot. The sample ballot instructs the voter to "tear off the top stub
here before mailing", while the actual ballot has the tear off portion
on the bottom.  The portion of the sample that is retained looks quite
different from the portion of the actual ballot that is retained.  I
suspect that the discrepancy will create even more confusion for the
voter than has already taken place this election. Please look into the
matter and call it to the attention of the appropriate authorities,
especially Mayor Williams.

RE:  DERELICT BUILDING AT SW CORNER OF FORT RENO
(Corner of Belt and Davenport)

**** From: Peter Copeland <CopelandP@SHNS.com>
Mr. Hayes: I saw your note and wanted to touch base. We live on Ellicott
and have been trying to rent that space for a non-profit Latin dance
company and cultural center, the Maru Montero Dance Company. The company
now is based at the Eldbrooke church behind the metro.

The problem is that no one in the city will take responsibility for the
building. I recently ran off two kids who had broken in. We boarded up
the door. Let me know if you figure out who is in charge. Thanks.

**** I have a vague memory that the U.S. Park Service owns this
building. -- KS

WARNING: TRASH EXPLODES WHILE BEING COLLECTED
From: Eugene Thompson <gene.thompson@jeremiah.com>
Tuesday, August 20, 2002, 8:20 am
Today as the DC Trash crew of Route # 307-2 were collecting trash at the
rear of 4314 Fessenden St. NW, Mr. Johnson, the trash man noticed paint
cans in the trash, just then the trash he was loading exploded. The
driver immediately dumped three piles of trash on the 4900 block 43rd
Place as it continued to burn. Four subsequent explosions occurred.
Neighbors furnished garden hoses to the trash men to help control the
fires in two of the piles. The Fire Department was called. They
responded and another explosion occurred as they were putting out the
blazes. Roby Gantt, one of the crew members of Route #307-2, commented
that this was the second time that trash has exploded while being
collected. In the first instance the trash man was badly burned.
Fortunately, no injuries occurred in this event. Mr. Johnson, who was
the one dumping the trash, was badly shaken by the experience, but took
the lead in fighting the fires until the Fire Department arrived on the
scene. He requested the neighbors to call 911 and asked for the garden
hoses furnished by two neighbors.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: "Susan Absher" <s.absher@worldnet.att.net>
Has anyone had experience repairing leaking copper pipes?  This is
apparently caused by cleaning work WSSC did a while back - the material
used to clean the pipes can cause pinhole leaks in cold water pipes.  If
anyone can recommend a plumber or other repair person to fix such leaks,
I would much appreciate it.

Does anyone have a double stroller they want to get rid of?  If so, I'm

Does anyone know of a reasonably-priced person or service who can

I recall someone asking about a good piano instructor.  I recommend
Victoria Wyatt, phone -   703.914.0690; e-mai -  rvwyatt@msn.com. Please
tell her how you heard of her. Thanks!  Jared
She is known as a fine performer, teacher and adjudicator. As a
performing artist, Wyatt has appeared in such venues as the Kennedy
Center's Terrace Theater, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Phillips
Collection, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Arts Club of
Washington. Many of her former students  now enjoy professional music
careers.

HANDYMAN
I had an excellent experience with Nice Day Services - Bill Wagner (301)
524-9620.  He came to see  what work was to be done, he explained his
prices, and he set an appointment for performing the  work.  Bill
arrived punctually on the appointed day with a helper (an option I had
agreed to).  They  spent about two hours (as he had estimated) doing a
variety of jobs - stabilizing the attic fan, replacing  the fan belt,
oiling and adjusting the fan slats, grating and screening the louvered
area in the attic,  coordinating the attic fan and light switches,
repairing two bathroom leaks (faucet and shower head),  and adjusting a
sliding closet door.  I was very pleased with their work. I have no
basis for evaluating his price, but it did not seem excessive.

PLS WATER TREES
From: "Rice, Bill (DDOT)" <Bill.Rice@dc.gov>
The Urban Forestry Administration of the District Department of
Transportation is asking District residents and business people to water
our city's trees during this period of low rainfall.

"All of our trees need water in this period of hot, dry weather, but
watering is especially critical for our younger trees and new
plantings," said Mark Buscaino, the District's State Arborist.
"Applying fifteen gallons of water twice per week should do the trick.
This equivalent to three large plastic paint buckets or turning on your
garden hose at a very slow rate for about one to one-half hour."
Buscaino also said that it is important to maintain three inches of
mulch around the base of all trees, again, especially for those planted
within the past two to three years.  Mulch helps conserve groundwater
and can take trees through dry spells where rainfall is not as frequent
as expected. Even trees that appear distressed can recover if properly
watered.

Over the next three weeks, the UFA is checking the survival of all trees
planted this past planting season.  If they are dead, the city's
planting contractors will replace them this fall/spring according to the
one-year guarantee provided with all newly planted street trees.
