DERELICT BUILDING IN THE  'HOOD
From:  Peter Hayes<phantomdork@earthlink.net>
I'm writing because I've noticed that the (former) Northwest Youth
Alliance building is becoming derelict. This is the building at the
corner of Belt and Davenport, at the SW corner of Reno Park. Lots of
broken windows, graffiti, etc. The last time I saw any legitimate
business going on there must have been seven years ago. Just wondering
if you know of any plans to rescue this
unique old building.

CRIME IN THE 'HOOD

**** From:  Bkravetz@aol.com (Beth Kravetz)
This is in response to the item re young man soliciting.  I can  only
tell you about my experience several weeks ago.  The first time I saw
him (nice looking, well dressed wearing tan pants and long-sleeved white
shirt & dark tie, late teens, maybe early twenties, black) he was
walking along 43rd Street (between Warren & Yuma) and going door
-to-door.  I was on my way to the subway, and just noticed him, because
it was unusual to have someone in the 'hood during the middle of the day
like that.

Then about a week later, he was here again --- dressed the same.  He had
been going to all the houses and where there was somebody home saying he
was selling magazine subscriptions, but had NOTHING with him --- no
sample magazines, no brochures, no subscription forms --- NOTHING.  And,
he kept going up and down the street, looking at each house.

I first called 2D and was told to call the non-emergency number, which I
did.  After about 10 minutes, a cruiser came by and as the guy was still
walking around (by now BACK on 43rd Street, where he had been the week
before), the officer was able to find him.  I do not know what happened
once the guy was stopped and questioned...  I do know, though, that he
hasn't been in this neighborhood since.

It just didn't seem right, and I had the feeling he was casing out the
homes to see who is here during the daytime.

**** Car Theft Advice
Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 20:17:49 EDT
From:  wharw32487@aol.com (Bill Harwood and Elaine Hubert)
To: tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
We are writing at the suggestion of the 2nd District Police.
Sometime late on Monday night, car thieves stole our 1999 Honda Civic
from in front of our house in AU Park.  We reported the loss to the
Police early on Tuesday morning.  On Thursday evening, the police called
to tell that they had found our car on 42nd and Chesapeake, near GDS.

The officer said that the thieves were highly professional.  They
jimmied the window down on the driver's side, opened the door, drove a
screwdriver though the plastic housing around the steering wheel,
started the car, and drove it five blocks away from the house. Then they
removed the two airbags, worth $2,000 each, and left the scene.  We feel
fortunate that they left our parking meter cash on the seat and took
nothing else.
This model of Honda is a popular one to steal, since it is easy to break
into and the parts are easily marketable. The police asked us to advise
our neighbors that these thieves are highly professional and patrol our
streets looking for vulnerable cars.  They would prefer to investigate a
report of suspicious activity in our neighborhood than to have to
investigate a theft.

STRANGE PARKING TICKET

RE: WATER FOR TREES
From:  "Ellis, Susan" <sellis@pd.state.gov>
I bought 2 tree-gators from American Plant and Seed on River Rd. to zip
around my big tree in front of the house and fill each sack with water
from hose.  It then drips out slowly from holes in the bottom. About $30
for each tree gator.

RE: WEST NILE AND DEAD BIRDS
From:  "Richard L. Paul" <rlpaulproductions@starpower.net>
Tommy Tomlinson and Penni St. Hilaire" <tommyt@erols.com> wrote about
their
experience with a dead bird/West Nile Virus.  The posting ended by
saying, "That's life in D.C. I guess."  Actually, the situation is the
same in Montgomery County.  They do not pick up every dead bird.  I
found a dead crow while I was jogging in Chevy Chase (Md) and called
Montgomery County's (or maybe it was the State's) West Nile Virus line.
They said that they do not come for every bird.  The recording said; put
on gloves, put the bird  in a baggie, put the bird somewhere, wash your
hands, and if they don't show up, throw the bird away.

Once upon a time, I grew up in Tenleytown.  Thought I'd throw out some
names of people who I knew way back when and see if any of them (or
their parents) are still in the area.  Dan Bullock?  Seth Sanders?
Jeanette Doddy?  John Rossiter?  Since 9/11, life seems so short.  Some
of the above-mentioned may have joined the military and I think of them
and hope they are doing well.  I was known as Mary Poore back then...

**** RE: TENLEYTOWN PAINTERS
---- From:  Wfrope@aol.com (Bill Rope)
I just saw something very negative about Tenleytown Painters, by
someone who used them ten years ago. I just want to say that -- if the
problem described was not an aberration -- then they must have learned
something in 10 years. We just had them do our house and roof. They were
extremely hardworking, thoroughgoing and knowledgeable. We've been in
this house over 20 years, and thought we'd had some excellent painters.
But Tenleytown Painters gave us the best job we've ever had, at a very
good price.

---- From: "Holsten, Steve" <sholsten@verisign.com>
We wanted to write to strongly recommend Tenleytown Painting.  We have
used their services repeatedly both for interior and exterior painting
and have found them to be responsive, professional and a pleasure to
work with.  The painters work diligently throughout the day, yet
maintain a respectful low-profile within the house that allows one to
continue everyday life with a minimum amount of disruption.  Their
quality of work is fantastic and we have heartily recommended Tenleytown
Painting to our friends.  If you have any questions or would like to
discuss our positive experiences using Tenleytown Painting, feel free to
call us at 202-966-7752.
Sincerely,  Stephen and Tami Holsten

---- From: Dderman527@aol.com  (C. Derman)
It is ironic that the two reports on Tenleytown Painters (one each in
the last two newsletters) were given (1)by someone who had used them ten
years ago, and (2) by someone who reported on a neighbor's experience of
many years ago.  My experience with Tenleytown Painters last year was
totally opposite of those two reports.  Am not sure if Tenleytown
Painter owner, Eric Blitte, who happens to live in the "hood", had an
opportunity to read these two reports--but I thought it only fair to
give our "very positive" experience and great results with Tenleytown
Painters--from a just a short time ago.   Perhaps both sides of the
story needs to be told.

---- From: DCEADT@aol.com (D.C. Edwards )
I had Tenley Town Painting work in my house the week of July 2, 2002.
The company fixed serious damage to the walls and flooring as well as
painted the entire house. The crew was outstanding and they transformed
my home. On the completion of the work, I was amazed at how elegant my
home turned out. I have had several friends inquire about Tenley Town
Painting. I had no reservations about referring the company.

POTENTIAL NEW DEVELOPMENT AT CORNER OF BRANDYWINE & WISCONSIN

**** From: "jonny276_2000" <jxs@vnf.com>
To: tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
Does anyone here know anything about a potential new development at the
corner of Brandywine & Wisconsin?  We got a newsletter suggesting that
there is a new development being planned where Babe's Billiards is.
Aside from this rather alarmist piece of paper, I have not heard
anything about it.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

**** From:  twodeacons@aol.com (Tad DiBiase)
 Reply-To: tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
Nothing has been decided yet.  I've met with the developer and they're
still trying to decide what they want to build there.  At one point they
were considering buying the Friendship Animal Hospital and building on
that site but that's off the table.  They will come to the next ANC
meeting after they have a better idea what they want to do.  They're
very interested in gauging neighborhood reaction so it's best to get
organized early!
Tad DiBiase, ANC Commissioner for ANC3E03.

**** From Kathy Smith
Some folks may not like what I'm about to say, but I don't feel that
development along Wisconsin Avenue is a bad thing as long as it's done
in a reasonable, tasteful way and provides ample indoor parking as well
as  promoting use of the Metro.  Since I moved to the 'Hood in 1972
there has been significant development that has increased the quality of
life in this area by enabling residents to walk rather than drive to do
their shopping, movie-going, restauranting, doctor-visiting, etc.  We
should all take an interest in what is happening along the Wisconsin
Avenue corridor and work to direct it toward more things that we need,
like a hardware store, and get rid of these holding operations like
multiple mattress stores. I hear a lot of  private griping  about the
lack of development. I'd like to challenge those folks to show up and
speak up at neighborhood meetings regarding the development of this
corridor.

RESPONSES TO DOGGIE POOP IN TRASH CANS  AND MY POSITION ON ISSUE

**** From:  RICK PRESCOTT <RPRESCOT@email.usps.gov>
Sorry, Kathy, I disagree.  Just last week I put a note on my can "No Dog
Poop, Please" with my name and phone number.  We use the alley door
where the supercan sits and this time of year the smell is rank if dog
crap is dumped in there when it's only stashed in a plastic bag. Your
reasons are fine and make sense from a neighborly point of view. But
good neighbors respect each others' property and my can is for our use,
not strangers.  Strangers shouldn't assume they have a "right" to use
other folks' cans. So fellow listers:  your dog, your poop.  Take it
home.

**** From: "Robert Hyman" <RobertHyman@erols.com>
This is for Anonymous regarding dog poop. If you do not want people
putting trash in your can store it on private property, as required by
law, and not in the alley.

**** From: Yoo Hoo <cultural_clutter@yahoo.com>
Don't be absurd. The "neighborly" thing these self-centered dogowners
fail to understand is that they have no right to purposefully let their
animal crap on someone else's property in the first place. Dog urine and
feces will damage or destroy most lawns and gardens. That's another
reason it is a health hazard and against the law. It's also why they
don't let Fido go in their own yard. These irresponsible boneheads, whom
you seem to find admirable, further prove how little respect they have
for their neighbors by surreptitiously illegally dumping their dog doo
in someone else's trash can, forcing others to, literally, face and
smell the result of their compounded boorish actions. Don't want to care
for and clean up after your pooch, then don't get one. It doesn't take a
village. What trailer park were these people raised in? How offensive
that you try to invalidate the sincere objections of the previous letter
writer w/ solipsistic anecdotal rationalizations. That's not very
neighborly, now is it?

**** From:  nancila@att.net  (Nancy LeRoy)
Re the comment of anonymous on people putting dog doo in her garbage
container.
The fact that dog owners pick up at all is miraculous,  at least where I
live.  In between Western Ave, 45th  Street and River Road I believe
there are more dogs than people (I am a dog owner) and I am amazed at
the amount of dog poop that's deposited.  I went to Ace Hardware and
bought signs (8 bucks each) and posted them in places near my house that
dogs had obviously made into their private bathroom.  I found piles
right next to the sign!  People who jog with their dogs often leave the
poop in the sidewalk as the poor animal must eliminate on the run.
People's front lawns are also used.

I wish there were some way people could be made to obey the laws and
pick up.  My personal survey shows that men pick up less often than
women, but I see all kinds of  people with huge dogs who seem to have no
qualms about leaving their dogs' messes for others to deal with.  I
wonder, too, how much of the doggy stuff gets into drain runoffs.  AU
Park is adrift in the stuff.

There are a group of dog owners who use Fort Bayard Park at 46th and
Fessenden to allow their dogs to run off  leash.  These people are
strict about picking up and telling any newcomers what the "rules" are.
These good souls are often run off by Park police using bull horns
because the dogs are off leash.  Too bad the Park police don't use some
of their free time to police the scofflaws who allow their dogs access
to every piece of private and public land in the area.
Thanks.  I needed to vent.

**** From: "Hazel F. Rebold" <hfrebold@earthlink.net>
Kathy, thanks so much for your generous offer to allow irresponsible
dog-walkers to use your garbage cans to dispose of their "used baggies."
Now, if you will please state your address in the next newsletter so
that people will know where to find this service. They get confused a
lot, and frequently end up at my house instead....

**** From: "Carolyn Long" <carolynlong@earthlink.net>
This isn't of earth-shattering importance, so you may not want to
include it in your last issue of the summer, but I too object to people
dropping their plastic baggies of dog poop into my super can. I've never
caught anyone doing this (it could be someone that I know and like), but
I often find several such parcels when I open the lid. I try to make
sure there's nothing in the super can that smells bad or would attract
rats. I keep plastic bags of food trash in the freezer until the morning
of  collection.

****From: wheels-dc@att.net (John Wheeler)
I'm so happy when people pick up dog poop, I certainly don't mind if
they put the bag in my trash can.  Same goes for fast food trash.  Put
it in my trash can if you want, but don't leave it on the ground. There
is one thing that does irritate me with trash though, and that's when
the lawn mowing services leave grass either in the supercans, filling
them up, or next to them.  One day every supercan for two blocks had two
bags of lawn clippings next to it.  Same goes for construction workers.
They don't want to take the waste away, so they put it in the supercans
along the alleys.

**** From: SurfBeach@aol.com (Rob Rowe)
I am one of those dog owners that walks blocks to find a trash can or I
take it home to my own.  I have seen the looks of various home owners
when you come near their trash cans with your bag in hand.  However, I
think your response was absolutely wonderful regarding allowing dog
owners to throw their doggy doolie in your trash can rather than have it
left on your lawn.  Good for you!

**** The last word is mine -- Since the last issue of COMMUNIT-E my
always smelly  (when the lid is up)  trash can received another dollop
of doggie doo (left on the grass in the tree box in front of my house)
and a squirrel who chose an injudicious moment to cross the street. I
guess some folks have sweet smelling garbage cans but mine smells like
... well... garbage. But enough about doggie doo and trash cans. There
are bigger issues in the 'Hood. -- KS.

-- END --
