LESLIE HOTALING,  HEAD OF DPW,  REPLIES
From:  Ann Loikow <johnl@erols.com>
Subject: RE: Illegal trash dumping
From: <leslie.hotaling@dc.gov>
Ann-- Again, thanks for watching our back.. The good news is that we
have a great partnership between DPW/SWEEP d MPD, in the form of an
"environmental crimes unit".  They do a lot of stakeouts in known hot
spots and recently caught a major dumper in the Ivy City area. And when
caught in the act, the fine is $25,000 and we confiscate the truck!  So,
if anyone ever sees it happening in the act, call 311, that's MPD's
non-emergency number. Otherwise, call 727-1000, and we'll send our
inspectors to go through the pile for any information that might lead to
the source of the trash.

RE-REGISTERING  YOUR CAR ON-LINE
From: Hahagerty@aol.com (Herb Hagerty )
DC DMV may not mail out notices any more (and I missed their press
conferences too), but in May, as the date for my expiry approached, I
re-registered my car on-line in the easiest and most efficient
re-registration I have ever done.

MORE ON SUSPECTED SCAMS
This has not been verified but it has been suggested, by a resident:
the address and suite number of the so-called police organization that
sent literature might be a post office box, not an actual office space.
Keep this in mind when you get solicitations that appear to be coming
from an office somewhere.

TENLEY LIBRARY
From: Marthans@aol.com
The Friends of the Tenley Library is looking for volunteers to help us
with collection of donated books for our semi-annual book sale.  Due to
the generosity of our neighbors, we can no longer accommodate book
donations at any hour at the library.  Instead, we are instituting a
"Book Donation Day" to be held the first Saturday of every month
(execpting holidays, when it will be the second Saturday of the month.)
Our first Donation Day will be held Saturday, July 7, from 10-2 at the
library.  If anyone is able to help out for a couple of hours, please
e-mail, Martha Saccocio at MarthaNS@aol.com.  The next one will be
August 4, then September 8 -- you get the idea.  Thank you.

THOUGHTS ON THE TAX REFUND
From:  "Jill Diskan" <jdiskan@worldnet.att.net>
Some of my friends and I have been discussing what to do with the tax
refund we will be getting at the end of July, courtesy of the Bush tax
cut. Since we didn't support the tax cut we were trying to decide what
to do with the tax refund.  I thought I might return mine to the
government to make a statement.  However, several of my friends had what
I thought was a better idea:  give it to charity.  I share this so that
those of you who also opposed the tax cut, have mixed feelings about
accepting the tax refund, and have the means to do so, might consider
doing the same.  With that said, there are several on-going campaigns to
preserve the quality of life in our neighborhood that could really the
funds to continue the good fight.  For example, legal representation of
the neighborhood in the on-going campaign to secure reasonable hours of
operation at the Round Table,  the Stop the Tower Coalition, the
negotiations on the AU Campus Plan, to name just a few.  Just something
to think about.

REPLY TO ANC COMMISSIONER
From: NancyLeRoy@aol.com
To: Ksmith1804@starpower.net
Who knows what Tad "would have voted for"???  Fact is, he voted
*against*  the proposed (and ultimately adopted) resolution opposing the
application for historic landmark designation.  isn't that what you
reported?

MURDOCK CREEK AND MILL

**** From: "Buddy Yingling" <ray@usp.org>
Re: Murdock Creek or Dogwood Creek
When I was a kid going to St. Ann's School, I used to go to the creek
located between Mass. and Dalecarlia with some of my friends who lived
near there.  That creek must now be in a new culvert under what is now a
street.  We used to call it "Devil's Bathtub."  Just curious if anyone
else remembers it that way?

****  From: Kathryn Ray <kcrdlb@bellatlantic.net>
Here is more on Murdock Mill-  Volume 31-32 of the Records of the
Columbia Historical Society (now Historical Society of Washington, DC)
has an extensive article on Washington mills.  Included is a photo,
circa 1930, of the ruins of Murdock Mill.  The Tenley Library has a copy
of the volume in the reference collection.

**** From: "Jeffrey Wells" <jrwdcc@worldnet.att.net>
Does anyone know what to do with the computers they replace?  Are there
schools or charitable institutions that would be interested?  I have a
Pentium 166 with a 1 gig hard drive, fax modem and MS Office 97 on it.
Is there a school or charitable institution that would be interested?
Although ancient in technology years, the computer has served me quite
well until this week.  Seems a shame to throw it away.  Any thoughts?

**** From:  "Barbara Gaskill" <barbarabillclem@erols.com>
Can anyone provide inexpensive lodging for a 30-ish Romanian ballerina
who is now an undergraduate dance major at the University of Maryland?
Her husband, also Romanian but a naturalized American citizen, is
currently in Romania and she has few resources.   She is supporting
herself with teaching ballet various places and with other part-time
work. We have been helping her by letting her live in our basement
(which has a bathroom with shower and a cooktop) for about a
year-and-a-half, but due to a complicated family situation we must have
our space back by August.   We have been charging her $250 a month, and
I doubt she could afford much more for the remaining two or three
semesters before graduation.   If you can help, please call us for more
details, 202-244-3635.

****  From: "Laura Akgulian" <laura@marginata.com>
Mariana, a young Argentinian, would like to rent an apartment from
mid-July until the end of the year (or longer). The daughter of a
diplomat, she works part-time at the embassy (yes, she has her visa!)
while pursuing her first love, the theater, at local venues such as the
GALA Theater.  She plans to apply to area schools to continue her
theatrical studies. Our good friend Cathy describes her as "kind, sweet,
intelligent, and respectful." The basement apt. she rents at the moment
is slated for demolition. Do you have any leads? Please send them to
Mariana via cathykapri@aol.com.

ON-LINE CONSUMER INFORMATION
**** From: "Roger S. Sattler" <rsattler@erols.com>
Neighbors might find it helpful to know that the Better Business Bureau
has online ratings, reports and complaint filings. Unfortunately for me,
I found out only after having a problem with Computer Clinic Center at
4433-A Wisconsin Ave. When I went to the BBB Web site, I found that my
problem was a common one and the Center's record is very poor.  I urge
everyone in this area to beware!  I'm sure BBB's information isn't
perfect, but it's better than nothing and, had I checked first, I would
not have entered the Center's door.

PEDESTRIANS AT FAULT?
From: "Robert Hyman" <roberthyman@erols.com>
To: "Dr. Gridlock" <drgridlock@washpost.com>
Dr. Gridlock, As you know drivers are worse than ever and endanger
other drivers and pedestrians alike. However, pedestrians need to share
the blame for many of their own "Run Ins" with vehicles. Pedestrians
seem to have this attitude" Go ahead and hit me, " I will sue you !!!! "
Pedestrians stand in the street waiting for the light to change and
frequently are not even looking at traffic passing only inches from
them. Pedestrians who park their cars on city streets walk into the
street and throw open their car door with no concern for traffic passing
along side. Passengers exiting cars seem to be indifferent to when they
open the car door and actually give no thought to exiting on the "Curb
Side" as requested by many Taxi drivers.  Pedestrians are so lazy they
would rather endanger themselves and break the law, that use the marked
crosswalk. I see pedestrians walking in the street when there are
sidewalks only feet away, why?  Pedestrian Gridlock is a reality in New
York where they have put barriers at certain sidewalk  locations,
actually preventing pedestrians from crossing at those intersections.
Until the Police strictly enforce the pedestrian laws and citizens are
educated about "Pedestrian Etiquette" we will continue to have
fatalities. Please ask your readers for their "Top Ten" things that irk
them about pedestrians and traffic. Thank you and keep up the good work!

DRINKING ON YOUR FRONT PORCH
The following item is from themail@dcwatch.com
###############
Booze on the Porch
Rob Fleming, rflemin@mindspring.com
No, it is not illegal to drink beer, or chardonnay, on your front porch.
It is illegal to drink alcohol in a "public place," or even be in
Possession of an Open Container (POCA). Public Place was defined as
streets, alleys, parks, and parking or vehicles thereon. Where this gets
complicated is the word "parking." This can be interpreted to mean the
area between the street and the building line where DC has various
rights to widen the street, construct sidewalks, etc.

In some inner city neighborhoods, this comes right up to the front door
(in fact, your front porch and bay window may intrude into this space).
In their efforts to curb public drinking, and the litter, urination, and
harassment of pedestrians that often goes with it, DC police sometimes
got (get) a little overzealous. They ended arresting a woman for
drinking chardonnay in her front yard while she examined her roses (the
"Chardonnay Lady" case). This prompted Councilmember Carol Schwartz to
introduce the "Chardonnay Lady" Bill which passed the Council and was
later incorporated into the omnibus alcoholic beverage regulation reform
bill which went into effect May 3 of this year.

It allows residents (homeowners or renters) of a property to drink
alcohol on a porch or any structure attached to the building. You
probably still can't drink chardonnay in your front yard, and the street
drinkers sucking down their Corolla and lime on my front steps last week
could be busted, but you can drink beer on your porch and back yard. So
if anyone gives you a hard time, refer them to section 25.1001 of the DC
Code, which says, " (b) Subsection (a)(1) of this section shall not
apply when drinking or possession of alcoholic beverages occurs in or on
a structure which projects upon the parking, and which is an integral,
structural part of a private residence, such as a front porch, terrace,
bay window, or vault, and when done by, or with the permission
of  the owner or resident." Cheers!
