LOOKING FOR A NEW INTERNET PROVIDER
Dear Computer Folks : AOL seems to be unable to provide me with a reasonable
way to mail COMMUNIT-E to all subscribers without cutting it in half and
sending it out multiple times. Therefore, I am looking for some suggestions
for providers that I should contact to see if they can provide what I need.
Your suggestions would be most appreciated. If possible, please include the
e-mail address for the customer services unit of the provider. I appreciate
any suggestions you can make -- KS

ANIMALS IN THE 'HOOD

**** From: Mary Rowse at  (202) 362-9279
Adopt Koko
Koko is a 4 year-old, neutered, housebroken dog who weighs 60 pounds and is
current on his vaccinations.  He has beautiful, black, "tiger-like" markings
swirled throughout his short, red/brown fur.  Koko is always happy to see
people.  He takes treats gently and is very responsive to training.  He's
very smart and affectionate and loves to cuddle, give kisses, have his tummy
rubbed, chase and retrieve balls in a fenced yard, go on walks, and be by
your side when you're home.  He is a true friend--a soulmate--a fabulous
companion.

The family who adopted Koko at 8 weeks of age has major medical and financial
problems and can no longer care for him.  Please call (202) 362-9279 for more
information (and photos) on this very special dog.  He is currently in a
foster home.

RE:  Lost/Found Kitty --- Glad the owner found the cat.  And, yes, it's true
that WHS will pick up any animal it sees on the street.  However, if the cat
had tags which showed where it lived, it is unlikely that it would have been
taken away, if it was found by its own house.  And if it WAS taken to the
shelter, the staff would have called the owner and told her that they had her
kitty.  She would not have had four days of worry and kitty would not have
had to suffer 4 days at the shelter.  Your pet, dog or cat, should always
have a tag with your name, address and telephone numbers.

There are definitely foxes in our neighborhood.  I grew up in Cleveland Park
and have been seeing foxes in NW DC all of my life.  There are also lots of
raccoons and possums, and occasionally deer will venture out of the woods
too.  From what I have seen a fox will not mess with a cat or dog unless the
fox is cornered.

**** From: Robert Hyman@aol.com
Fox are regularly seen throughout Glover Park and have even run across the
Upper Whitehaven dog park early in the morning with six or so dogs playing.
Also, a large red fox in good shape was observed at the intersection of
Huidekoper St. and Manor Pl.

I am curious to know how the anonymous writer wishing to get the Crows to
leave has concluded that they are responsible for the fact that there are
fewer songbirds than there were 10 years ago. I happen to enjoy the Crows.
If in fact they attack or frighten wrens and Cardinals and Warblers, I am
sorry and surprised to hear it. I think the best tactic for those who wish
to preserve the small bird population is to plant for them. Shrubbery that
bears fruit for winter forage can make a big difference to the birds we
want to attract for all sorts of reasons. Dense hedges offer habitat and
shelter from all sorts of larger animals. My garden, after 15 years of
planting, contains an amazing array of winter food, dense cover, and a
pond, which is visited regularly for water. I hear Carolina Wrens singing
as I write this, and Cardinals and Catbirds use my hemlock hedge for a home
all winter. The Crows are all around us, and often entertain me with their
curious and rowdy ways.  My own personal vendetta has been against the
rats, which moved in to our alley in force last summer. Destruction of
their habitat (my precious compost pile) and relentless patching and
weighing down the lids of the trash cans in the alley seems to have done
more to discourage them than all the city's poisoning efforts. I am hopeful
that they've moved on, but I am poised for more seek-and-destroy activities if
necessary.

VIRUS TIP
From:   vual7@yahoo.com (Anji Henderson)
Beware of e-mail with an attachment named Annakournikova.jpg.vbs... Basically
"VBS" stands for Visual Basic Scripting, which is the mini program that makes
most virus' work... Outlook express uses Visual Basic Scripting in it's
codeing, so it can run these programs.  DON'T open anything with an
attachment that has .VBS anywhere in it if you use Out Look!!!!

NEW INFORMATION? / IDEAS ABOUT HECHINGER / SEARS BUILDING

This was sent as a rumor, not fact. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
**** From: Anonymous
I have heard a rumor from a St. Columba's parishioner that they are seriously
interested in the Hechinger property. With Friendship Terrace and Iona Senior
Services this would add a geographic unity to their existing outreach
ministries.

**** From: roths@sprintmail.com (Laura Roth)
I live at the corner of 40th & Veazey.  These two blocks are home the Verizon
trucks during the week and recently it seems like there are more and more
non-residents who are also parking here during the day.  (Many with MD tags.)
Is it at all possible to develop a building in the Hechingers/Sears location
that would incorporate some retail and a BIG all day public parking facility?
I'm guessing that most of the people parking around my house are either
heading to metro or working nearby.  I have to park fairly far away from my
front door on a frequent enough basis that it's becoming aggravating.  (I
have a newborn, so I'm not just whining!)

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
Heating / Air Conditioning

**** From: DBEDC@aol.com (David Epstein)
I am happy with Robinson's Heating and Air-Conditioning.  It's a family run
business and small enough so that service is good.  They can be reached at
301-871-8902. Ask for Joset of Marie.

I have used Bethesda Heating and Air Conditioning for about 20 years and they
are VERY good, honest and reasonably priced (as these things go!).

**** From: Mitnick123
I can recommend F.S. Campbell Co. for heating and Air Conditioning.  I have
used them for years for routine maintenance.  They are honest, courteous,
professional and knowledgeable.  Their phone number is 301-869-1843.
