ANC 3F RESOLUTION

URGING THE IMMEDIATE REACTIVATION OF THE RED LIGHT CAMERA

AND OTHER TRAFFIC CONTROL MEASURES AROUND THE INTERSECTION OF CONNECTICUT AND NEBRASKA AVENUES, NW

WHEREAS, the intersection of Connecticut and Nebraska Avenues is located within the boundaries of ANC 3F; and

 

            WHEREAS, according to residents and 2nd District MPD, this intersection is the site of speeding, frequent red-light running, numerous fender-benders, and, most recently, on April 9, 2004, the site of an accident involving fatalities; and

 

            WHEREAS, this is a much used intersection for pedestrians and school children attending numerous public and private schools located on both sides of Connecticut Avenue near this intersection, all of whom feel very unsafe and threatened by speeding cars and red-light running while crossing this intersection (please see attached e-mails); and    

 

WHEREAS, this intersection currently has a red light camera; and

 

WHEREAS, based on the Metropolitan Police Department’s own data found at www. dc.gov/info/traffic/redlight_violations.shtm, this camera has been inactive with no explanation since July 2003;

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that ANC 3F strongly urges the Metropolitan Police Department reactivate the red light camera at this intersection immediately; and

 

FURTHER, that the Metropolitan Police Department, install a speed camera at this intersection, with the appropriate signage for each camera; and

 

FURTHER, that DDOT consider installing a raised pedestrian crosswalk, with appropriate striping, at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Nebraska Avenue, and that DDOT consider and recommend to ANC 3F other appropriate traffic calming measures. 

 

Approved by a vote of 6-0-1 at a duly noticed public meeting on May 17, 2004, with a quorum present (four commissioners constituting a quorum).
