ANC3F RESOLUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF HOLT HOUSE

WHEREAS: Holt House, an historic property dating from the early 1800s on the grounds of the National Zoological Park, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973; and
WHEREAS: Holt House, under the stewardship of the National Zoo since 1890, was previously used by the Zoo for administrative offices, but has been unoccupied and boarded up since 1988; and
WHEREAS: the severely deteriorated condition of Holt House has caused the D.C. Preservation League to place Holt House, for the third year in a row, on its 2000 List of Washington's Ten Most Endangered Places; and
WHEREAS: the plight of Holt House has been a concern of the neighboring communities for a long time and the steady deterioration and poor stewardship of the building has been brought to the attention of the Zoo and city officials; and
WHEREAS: the Kalorama Citizens Association (KCA), at the request of concerned residents, formed a Holt House Preservation Task Force this year to help save Holt House; and
WHEREAS: this Task Force is charged with educating the public by sponsoring monthly guided walks around the Holt House site, and will work with other groups in preserving the rich history and cultural landscape of Holt House and the surrounding area; and
WHEREAS: this Task Force is also working to initiate a public-private partnership with the National Zoo to raise funds and pro bono services necessary to restore the Holt House.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: ANC3F endorses the KCA's Holt House Preservation Task Force and supports efforts to create a public-private partnership with the National Zoo;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: ANC3F encourages those in positions
of leadership within the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Congress, the
D.C. Council, the Preservation Community and others to endorse as well
as facilitate the creation of public-private partnership to preserve, restore,
and maintain Holt House for such use in serving both the community and
the National Zoo.
