WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA or METRO) has adopted Resolution #2000-28 adopting guidelines for the escalator canopy program as recommended by the General Manager; and

WHEREAS, the General Manager of WMATA recommended that canopies should be installed at outdoor escalators to protect them from the weather so as to improve reliability and passenger convenience; and

WHEREAS, said Resolution lists "Van Ness-West" and "Van Ness-East" [meaning, "Van Ness­UDC-West" and "Van Ness-UDC-East"] on its "53-Station Installation Priority List"; and

WHEREAS, said Resolution directs staff to work closely with local jurisdictions to ensure that WMATA's escalator canopy program activities are coordinated with other local land use and adjacent development activities for design compatibility and/or regulatory requirements; and

WHEREAS, WMATA staff is working closely with this Advisory Neighborhood Commission;

NOW, THEREFORE, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3F,

A) Generally endorses the WMATA escalator canopy program;

B) Requests that WMATA schedule installation of the Van Ness-UDC canopies as early as possible on its construction time table.
